Germany is Still Against Russia Energy Sanctions

German foreign minister Annalena Baerbock told national broadcaster ZDF that an immediate halt to oil and gas imports from Russia would jeopardise security of supply in Europe but not end the war in Ukraine.

"The point is – and I think it is important that everyone is aware of this – that we in Germany, but also in Europe as a whole, are massively dependent on Russian energy," she said.

Also "There is currently no other way of securing Europe's supply of energy for heat generation, for mobility, for power supply and for industry," a government statement says, adding that Germany has been working with its partners within the EU and beyond for months to develop alternatives to Russian energy. "But that won't happen overnight," German chancellor Olaf Scholz says.
